For the film’s 50th anniversary, National Geographic has announced a Jaws documentary titled Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story. The 90-minute documentary will show the most comprehensive behind-the-scenes account of Jaws ever produced. The film will premiere on July 10 on National Geographic and stream on Disney+ and Hulu the next day.

Directed by Laurent Bouzereau, Jaws @ 50 is the only authorized documentary tied to the film’s 50th anniversary. The doc received Steven Spielberg’s full participation and blessing and is produced by Spielberg’s own Amblin Documentaries and Nedland Films, alongside Wendy Benchley, the wife of Jaws author Peter Benchley, and Laura Bowling.

The documentary will include newly recorded reflections from Spielberg as he opens up about the infamously difficult shoot that could have derailed his career. It will cover everything, from battling malfunctioning mechanical sharks and rough weather to post-production PTSD. It will also include never-before-seen footage from Spielberg’s and Peter Benchley’s personal archives, including rare outtakes and home videos.

Jaws @ 50 includes exclusive interviews with the original cast and crew, including John Williams (composer), Joe Alves (production designer), Lorraine Gary (Ellen Brody), Carl Gottlieb (Meadows, screenwriter), Jeffrey Kramer (Hendricks), Jonathan Filley (Cassidy), Jeffrey Voorhees (Alex Kintner) and Ian Shaw, son of the late Robert Shaw (Quint). In addition, other filmmakers and artists such as J.J. Abrams, Emily Blunt, James Cameron, Cameron Crowe, George Lucas, Greg Nicotero, Jordan Peele, Steven Soderbergh, Guillermo del Toro, Robert Zemeckis, and more reflect on how Jaws shaped their work and the cinematic landscape. Benchley’s family and prominent shark experts are also included, as they discuss the broader environmental message in the doc.

While this documentary is a celebration of the iconic film, it also opens conversations about the “Jaws effect,” the wave of fear of sharks that came after the film was released. The message is in line with National Geographic’s educational mission through the SharkFest program.

Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story premieres Wednesday, July 10 at 9/8c on National Geographic and will be available to stream Thursday, July 11 on Disney+ and Hulu. It is the headline for this year’s SharkFest. Check out the trailer below.
