Oscar-winner Javier Bardem is in talks to join the latest installment of the Disney summer franchise Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. He would join Johnny Depp, who will reprise his Jack Sparrow role for the fifth time.
Details of the plot have yet to be announced, but Bardem’s character is rumored to be a foe of Sparrow’s who is set upon revenge for the loss of his brother. Geoffrey Rush is expected to return as Captain Barbossa, along with Orlando Bloom as hero Will Turner.
Bardem has more than proven his ability to play the bad guy, evidenced by his turn as Bond villain Silva in 2012’s Skyfall, and his unforgettable Oscar-winning work in 2008’s No Country for Old Men. He is currently filming the medical drama The Last Face with Charlize Theron under the direction of Sean Penn.
A reported love interest for Depp’s Sparrow has yet to be cast.
The film, with a script by Jeff Nathanson (Indiana Jones 4, Catch Me If You Can), is currently in pre-production with an eye toward a July 2017 release. Joachim Ronnin and Espen Sandberg, the Norwegian duo behind 2012’s Kon-Tiki, are attached to direct.
