Director Jason Reitman has just finished filming on his new Ghostbusters film, currently set for a 2020 release. The first Ghostbusters, directed by Jason’ father Ivan Reitman, was introduced in 1984 and led by fan favorites in Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Ernie Hudson and Harld Ramis, just to name a few. The film caught early success that would lead to its eventual pop culture breakthrough. Even now generation of fans can recall the movie’s signature theme song or the terrifying image of Mr. StayPuff walking around New York.
The director took to Instagram with a final cast photo on their last day of shooting.
Seen above is Reitman with his father/producer Ivan, and cast members Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, and Logan Kim. Due to the poor commercial success of 2016’s female-led Ghostbusters, Reitman’s Ghostbuster movie felt the need to go back to its roots. The soft-reboot will take place in the same timeline as the original two that started back in the 80’s, as cameos of the previous cast will be part of the film to some degree. Furthermore, the plot seems to revolve around Egon’s family paying homage to the character, as the late Harold Ramis passed away in 2014.
Unfortunately, while the 2016 reboot saw positive reviews, its struggle to make a franchise impact caused Sony to reconsider their property. This left the door open for a new idea or vision as proposed by Reitman. An early teaser for the film gave us a glimpse of the Ecto-1 giving fans hope that this time around the film will generate less dumb controversy. Ghostbusters is set to release on July 20th, 2020.
