In a world that appreciates the building of a good franchise, Universal Studios is having a really tough time with their horror project, the Dark Universe. This film tentpole was expected to be a celebration of classic movie monsters from Dracula to The Invisible Man. Every film was to pay tribute to a classic movie monster while offering a new and modern spin. Additionally, each was to tie into the next with various complex characters that audiences grow to love much like comic franchises do. Instead, with the 2017 release of The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella, audiences were disappointed to find an average action film rather than a horror flick. Now, Universal has suspended the potential franchise for the meantime.
With that said, Jason Blum has wishes to be Universal’s knight in shining armor. In recent tweet, Blum offers to take over the Dark Universe according to Cinema Blend. This would be a huge undertaking, but Blumhouse is a horror movie authority with several successful horror franchises (The Purge series and the Insidious films) already under its belt. Knowing that Blum has had success with his horror endeavors thus far and that Blumhouse and Universal Pictures are partners makes Blum an ideal candidate for taking over the Dark Universe.
If Blum’s successes were not enough, there is also the fact that he has worked with many famed and talented names in the horror business. Filmmakers like James Wan (Saw and The Conjuring) and M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense and Split) have worked with Blumhouse and would be brilliant directors to come up with a new edge for classic monsters. With the likes of Blum and some other talents familiar with the horror genre, Blumhouse in partnership with Universal Pictures could really bring the Dark Universe back from the dead with a renewed sense of fright.
