Director James Mangold (recently known for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) is in talks of directing the newly announced DC Swamp Thing. DC Studios’ announced the film “will investigate the dark origins of Swamp Thing.”
Swamp Thing first appeared in 1971’s House of Secrets #92 and then again on the big screen in 1982 (directed by horror director Wes Craven).
The Swamp Thing is an American comic book superhero published by DC Comics, who is a humanoid/plant elemental creature. Writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson created the beast.
The Swamp Thing is a part of a 10-film project announced by DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn in the first chapter of the new DC Universe, which is expected to launch in 2025. Mangold was teasing his involvement with the film late Tuesday night with a picture on Twitter.
Swamp Thing rose to fame when V For Vendetta creator Alan Moore was hired to write for the creature’s comic series – Moore’s first job for DC. After almost four years, Swamp Thing became popular in the DC canon. Thanks to Moore, the creature developed into more of a mythological pant-based creature who absorbed the consciousness of scientist Alec Holland. Holland was killed after creating a formula to restore and enhance plant life.
In 2019, Annabelle writer Gary Dauberman and Falling Skies creator Mark Verhaiden created a short-lived 2019 TV series based on the character. The creature will now appear in Gunn’s new universe, which will be told across film and television, as well as video games.
During the slate presentation on Tuesday, Gunn announced that Swamp Thing would have the darkest tone of any of the projects in development. However, the creature will still interact with other DC heroes in future projects.
The new DC Universe will start with Superman: Legacy, written by Gunn and released in the summer of 2025.
