Viewers are eagerly watching the skies as the anticipation builds for Superman to arrive in theaters. While still a little over a month away, director James Gunn has shared one of his, quite literally, biggest inspirations when crafting the film.
Gunn is bringing the man of steel back to the big screen to kick off a new string of DC films, helmed by him and Peter Safran. In the new movie, audiences catch up with Clark Kent after he’s already become Superman, but while he’s still learning the ropes, trying to fight against Lex Luthor and his repeated plans to destroy Superman.
While the trailers have shown Superman taking on larger than life creatures, Collider notes that Gunn wasn’t shy about his own inspiration from another larger than life creature. He looked towards Godzilla: Minus One, the most recent entry into the Big-G’s series from his home turf, as a way of learning how to balance story with spectacle.
“My goal was to make a film like Godzilla Minus One, which depicted Godzilla but also had great human drama. Superman and the flying dog (Krypto) also appear in this work, but there is an underlying human story. The relationship between Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor is at the core of the work,” Gunn said.
Superman hits theaters July 11th.
