Per The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn has a theory that among the multiple problems that are currently plaguing the movie industry, it is ‘dying’ because of one major reason: unfinished screenplays.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn discussed his current tenure as co-CEO of DC Studios and how he’s trying to do things a bit differently than other studio execs who are navigating the hurdles Hollywood is currently facing, because, as he says,
“I do believe that the reason why the movie industry is dying is not because of people not wanting to see movies…It’s not because of home screens getting so good. The number-one reason is because people are making movies without a finished screenplay.”
As an example, he pointed out conditions he saw while at Marvel during its period of increased output:
“…There were people that were lazy and didn’t put their time in. And then there were other directors that worked really hard and maybe didn’t have the best movie come out, but they did everything they could…That wasn’t fair. It wasn’t right. And it killed them,”
Disney CEO Bob Iger has since reversed course on the output after the underperformance of several of its films at the box office.
In comparison, Gunn says there is no such mandate at DC Studios, and that they won’t move forward on a film if the script isn’t where it’s supposed to be, noting that they’ve already done this with one such project:
“Everybody wanted to make the movie. It was greenlit, ready to go…The screenplay wasn’t ready. And I couldn’t do a movie where the screenplay’s not good.”
Gunn’s version of the DC Cinematic Universe is set to launch with his directed reboot of Superman on July 11th, with films centered around the characters of Supergirl and Clayface following next year.
