As an innovative creator, it is no surprise that James Gunn’s ambitions led him and his team to create 600 versions of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to fit in varying unique types of theater configurations appropriately. According to Evan Jacobs, the VP of Finishing and Stereo at Disney, the desire was to “give every exhibitor in the United States and in most international territories [the ability to] maximize their screen size for the audience. So wherever you go to see it, you’re gonna see the best version.” In this regard, it is the most ambitious Marvel movie, since most films only create 500.
Jacobs goes on to describe how Gunn intentionally directed and shot some scenes for the purpose of creating these variations, which then implies Gunn’s value for having the audience experience all the film has to offer. He stated that Gunn, “designed it and he shot and framed for it [with this in mind]. That was his creative intention.” Jacobs also noted that Gunn created version of the first two Guardians with variable aspect ratios, and strove to make such variations more widely available for the threequel.
When asked about the scheduling throughout those final post-production weeks, Jacobs responded with, “Marvel has almost become legendary in the postproduction community for pushing pretty hard on deadlines and kind of waiting till the last minute to make the movie as great as we could possibly make it. [But] the movie was pretty solid. It was the movie he was gonna make at the beginning. … We didn’t have to chase a lot of crazy, and the visual effects landed in a rational, sane way. We’ve all been just like pinching ourselves.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases in theaters on May 5th. Check out our review for the film here.
