The co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, confirmed that DC is creating an alternate opening for Elseworlds spinoffs to separate them from DCU, which is launching this summer with the release of Gunn’s Superman. When asked the question on Threads as to why HBO’s The Penguin and the animated Harley Quinn series do not incorporate the DC Studios logo intro, Gunn established that both of those projects are set outside the DCU. Following this, Gunn stated that they are “currently working on the DC Studios Elseworlds opening,” therefore upcoming non-DCU media will present a divergent intro sequence
The main non-DCU Elseworlds project that is confirmed to be released is The Batman Part II, with a set date in October 2027. However, Gunn has confirmed with a simple yes when asked if the J.J. Abrams’ Superman project was still in the works. This film will launch a Black actor as Superman. It has not been confirmed whether Keanu Reeves’ will reprise his role as Constantine; however, the sequel script was finished last year. At the same time, Joker: Folie á Deux’s open ending left it for another sequel, but because of box office performance, this could likely put a hold on any upcoming projects for Todd Phillips’ DC franchise.
Gunn’s DCU is thriving with Mike Flanagan’s film rendition of Clayface confirmed to be set in the universe. Andy Muschiett’s Brave and the Bold will present an exclusively new Batman character, quashing the theories that Robert Pattinson’s version will reprise his role in the main cinematic universe.
