James Gunn, director of the upcoming DC Studios Superman film, was displeased when French news network aired a fake, AI-generated trailer for the 2025 movie. Although the video was quickly removed from France.tv, it circulated on Twitter, where user @foxhouet shared it. Gunn’s response was straightforward: three vomiting emojis, clearly reflecting his disgust.
The trailer opens with Christopher Reeve’s children promoting their documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, expressing their love for Superman before shifting to deepfake images of David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The use of Reeve’s children in the fake trailer sparked significant backlash, as many felt it was inappropriate to include them in an AI-generated context while discussing their father’s legacy. Gunn’s upset reaction is entirely understandable.
This isn’t Gunn’s first run-in with misleading AI content; earlier this year, he criticized fake set photos, pointing out glaring errors, such as “David Corenswet’s hands made of wax” and other bizarre visuals. He urged fans to scrutinize these inaccuracies.
Regarding the actual trailer, Gunn indicated at a recent NYCC panel that while it won’t be released immediately, it’s not too far off either. With the film set to debut on July 11, 2025, anticipation is building for the official reveal of Corenswet as the new Superman. Written and directed by Gunn, this film marks the start of Warner Bros.’ reimagined DC Universe, offering a fresh take on the iconic hero while honoring his legacy of “truth, justice, and the American way.”
