With the increase of AI usage, there has been an acceptance of it in films, such as The Brutalist, but also pushback from directors such as Guillermo del Toro, nearly every film is getting its turn in the AI rumor mill. James Gunn’s Superman is the latest film to have AI rumors. Superman kicked off the new DCU under Peter Safran and Gunn, and chapter 1 of the new DCU: Gods and Monsters. The summer blockboster became the highest-grossing superhero film of the year.
Gunn shared a video on X of his dog, Ozu, playing with his cat. Ozu was the model for Superman’s dog Krypto. Gunn used this post to clarify that the CG and VFX work done for Ozu/Krypto was not AI.
Framestore, Wētā FX, and Industrial Light & Magic collaborated on the visual effects for the installment, working together to bring Krypto to life. VFX is one of the many categories the Superman film is including in their FYC campaign.
Superman is now available to stream on HBO Max. It’s sequel, Man of Tomorrow, is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
