James Franco has made some strange movies; see his turn as a white Floridian gangsta leading a team of bikini’d robbers in Spring Breakers, as a pre-Dorothy Wizard in Oz the Great and Powerful, or as himself in the post-Apocalyptic comedy This Is the End. But the strangest role Mr. Franco may ever play is Rant Casey, a nocturnal time traveler with a penchant for practical jokes, crashing cars, and contracting rabies. But that’s what you get when you adapt a novel like Rant, from Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk.
Lit Reactor first reported Franco had made deal with Palahniuk to option Rant. This isn’t the first time Franco has handled a novel adaptation; last year, he wrote, directed, and acted in a film version of No Country For Old Men author Cormac McCarthy’s Child of God, and appeared in Palo Alto, and adaptation of his own short story collection. An exclusive from Deadline later confirmed Franco wants Pamela Romanowski to write and direct the film – Romanowski also wrote and directed another Franco produced film, the upcoming Adderall Diaries.
One notable aspects of Rant is how each chapter takes the form of an interview with a different character, none of them the titular protagonist. We’ve yet to learn if this style will be translated to screen, or if the film version will opt for a more traditional narrative. We’ll be sure to let you know when we find out.
