Comedian and actor James Corden recently revealed that a few years ago he made the decision to audition to play the role of Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
In an episode of Josh Horowit’z podcast, Happy Sad Confused Corden describes how the process didn’t go as Corden expected. Deadline writes what the Late Late Show host noted in the podcast. “Everyone, every single person in London auditioned for Lord of the Rings. ” Everybody,” Corden says in a segment you can view above. “I auditioned for Samwise…and I was doing it, Josh. I was doing the accent and everything.”
Unfortunately, Corden didn’t end up with the role. The actor landing the role of Samwise who is known to be the best friend and sidekick of Elijah Wood’s heroic hobbit, Frodo Baggins, was Oscar nominee Sean Astin. But even if Corden missed out on his chance to visit Middle-earth, he can admit that he does “very much enjoy” the epic fantasy films based on the book series by J. R. R. Tolkien.
Jackson’s Lord of the Rings film trilogy was well received by critics and audiences alike; his three movies earned close to $3 billion worldwide and won 17 Academy Awards combined. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, an epic prequel series created for Prime Video by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, is currently giving Tolkien’s source material new life on screen. The series’ first season concluded in October, around the same time that production on the second season began.
After eight and a half years, Corden announced to the public that he would leave his role as host for The Late Late Show next spring.
