James Cameron is returning to the Terminator franchise to write the 7th installment. Cameron has started writing; however, one challenge has made him procrastinate writing. Cameron wants to see where AI will progress.
The last movie Terminator: Dark Fate, was released in 2018 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton. Unfortunately, Dark Fate had an underwhelming performance. Although this is the case, Cameron shared at the Dell Tech World conference that he is writing another Terminator movie but waiting to see where AI goes. There will likely be few updates to the franchise because of the writer’s strike and Cameron doing Avatar 3. He also wants to be more hands-on with this movie.
Since the franchise uses technological threats and with technology progressing rapidly in reality, Cameron wants to wait to write until AI is more clearly advanced and defined. In addition, Cameron wants to avoid taking on technological concepts in the movie that could easily be debunked.
Schwarzenegger also says that he is done with the franchise. The franchise may not be done, but he is. He says, “I got the message loud and clear that the world wants to move on with a different theme when it comes to The Terminator.”
Even though Schwarzenegger is done with the franchise, he still enjoys playing the character. He looks back at this time fondly and acknowledges The Terminator’s role skyrocketed him to success.
