The first trailer for the highly-anticipated Avatar: Fire and Ash debuted one week ago in front of screenings of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The trailer, which has since been posted online, reveals many secrets for the Avatar universe and also creates many questions.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, director James Cameron discussed the role of the Wind Traders in the film. Their leader will be played by David Thewlis, known for his appearances in the Harry Potter franchise as Remus Lupin. It isn’t exactly clear what their motives are as of yet, but Cameron said that, “They’re going to be throughout the cycle of 3, 4 and 5,” referring to the fact that this group will make appearances in the next three installments of the series.

He also made a point to explain how the Wind Traders are different from other Na’vi tribes. Cameron stated, “They’re still 100% Na’vi but they’re not place-specific, which is different because most indigenous people are very rooted in their sense of place.” It seems that the main plot of the film will not revolve around the Wind Tribe, but rather the Ash tribe, who come into conflict with Jake Sully and his family in the trailer.

Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water are two of the highest-grossing films of all time, and James Cameron intends to continue that streak with the third film. It will of course be played in 3D, as the previous films were filmed with that format in mind. Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters this December 19.
