After nearly a decade of production, audiences are now one step closer to the world of Pandora as introduced in James Cameron’s 2009 film, Avatar. The Titanic and Terminator director released concept art stills from the upcoming sequel at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, showing artistic renderings of the film’s fictional setting.
The official Avatar 2 Twitter account followed by tweeting out the images, stating, “In the #Avatar sequels, you won’t just return to Pandora — you’ll explore new parts of the world.”

Reactions from fans have been lukewarm, criticizing the long production time and citing the film as irrelevant in the 2020s. Considering the first Avatar came out in 2009, these criticisms aren’t without at least some merit, as more than a decade’s worth of films have transpired since we last saw Pandora. Not to mention the fact that Avengers: Endgame surpassed Avatar‘s long-held box office record for highest grossing film of all time last year.
However, audiences will be getting much more of Avatar whether they want it or not. The sequel is set for release in Dec. 2021, with a third, fourth, and fifth film set to follow in 2023, 2025, and 2027 respectively. To see more of the fictional world of Pandora on the big screen, fans will have to wait for Avatar 2‘s Dec. 17, 2021 release date.
