James Cameron is planning to take the world of Avatar into the realm of animation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

With the third entry in the sci-fi saga, Fire and Ash, set to be released this winter and its first trailer having recently premiered in theaters and online, Cameron discussed approaching Disney with a potential animated project:

“I said, ‘Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that’s essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn’t have expected from that world…There might even be an animated feature in there…'”

Having already expanded into other media like video games, such as Frontiers of Pandora, and even the Pandora – The World Of Avatar theme park at Disney World, animation seems like a logical step for the franchise, with the director comparing it to other sci-fi tentpoles, that also had animated adaptations such as The Matrix, Death + Robots, and Secret Level:

“…great examples for how we can add texture and baroque detail to the world of Avatar…backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies. Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition. You could go anywhere you want.”

Due to the workload involved with Fire and Ash, however, Cameron notes that the animation project is still in its early stages:

“We’re still gathering our stories and that sort of thing, and I’ve got to find the boutique filmmakers, the animators, that want to do it.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled for release on December 19, 2025.
