On Friday it was reported that James Cameron is in early talks with Deadpool director Tim Miller to direct a reboot/conclusion to the famous billion dollar sci-fi franchise: the Terminator series. James Cameron’s production company Lightstorm Entertainment will be producing the feature film.
Cameron, whose copyright reversion happens 35 years after the release of the 1984 original film (aka 2019), still has some say over how all Terminator movies are made. But the fact that he is in talks to actually take an active role in this production is big news, being he hasn’t been directly involved in the Terminator series since Terminator 2: Judgement Day. However, Cameron has already committed to directing five Avatar movies, so will most likely act more in a ‘godfather’ role (aka overseeing the development/production of Tim Miller’s vision). But the chance of Cameron’s involvement in the picture is encouraging news for the production, as Cameron’s input is not only an endorsement of the film, but also could greatly effect how well the story is written and constructed.
David Ellison, of Skydance Productions, will be financing the reboot, as he owns the rights to the Terminator series (after he obtained them from his sister, producer Megan Ellison of Annapurna Pictures, who had acquired the rights at Cannes Film Festival in 2011 for $20 million). Skydance Pictures and Paramount Pictures were responsible for 2015’s Terminator Genisys.
