Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to play the purple-cape-wearing villain Mysterio in the sequel to Spider Man: Homecoming. Quentin Beck, alias Mysterio, was introduced by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1964 as a special-effects expert who committed crimes using his illusion-making skills.
Jon Watts, director of the first Spider-Man: Homecoming, will be directing the sequel, and Tom Holland returns to the role of Spider-Man. If Gyllenhaal comes on, he will be joining Michael Keaton’s villain, Vulture, from the first film.
The sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to be released July 5, 2019 by Marvel and Sony.
If you can’t wait for Homecoming, you can catch Into the Spider-Verse, the next spider-installment that features Miles Morales among a cast of other spider-folks, in theaters on December 14 of this year. Gyllenhaal can next be seen in Paul Dano’s Wildlife, Dan Gilroy’s Velvet Buzzsaw, and Luca Guadagnino’s Let it Fall Back.
