Jake Gyllenhaal Finds His Doppelganger in Twisty Noir ‘Enemy’

Jake Gyllenhaal Meets His Match in ‘Enemy’

Jake Gyllenhaal and his Prisoners director Denis Villenueuve re-team in the twisty thriller Enemy which just premiered an alluring new trailer.  The film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last September alongside the 2013 hit Prisoners and was actually filmed shortly beforehand, stars Gyllenhaal as a man who spots his double while watching a film.  An ensuing mystery evolves as the doubles cross paths with one another.

The Canadian film earned good reviews in Toronto last fall, where Variety‘s Peter Debruge called the film, “Mysterious enough that many viewers will insist on seeing it twice,” and the Hollywood Reporter‘s Deborah Young called it, “As hauntingly strange as it is inconclusive and frustrating, Enemy, directed by Denis Villeneuve (Incendies), is one of the more head-scratching additions to the doppelganger genre. Yet it will certainly have its fans.”  Mélanie Laurant (Inglourious BasterdsBeginners), Sarah Gadon (CosmopolisA Dangerous Method) and Isabella Rossellini co-star.  This marks the second English language feature film from the Canadian-born Villenueuve, who broke out with the 2010 French-language drama Incendies, which earned Foreign Film Oscar nomination.  Enemy comes from a script by Javier Gullón and was based on the novel The Double by José Saramago (not to be confused with the Fydor Dostoyevsky work upon which the Jesse Eisenberg starrer The Double is based).

Enemy will be released in the U.S. by A24 Films on March 14, 2014.
