The first image from the upcoming mystery romantic comedy The Lovebirds has hit the internet. The film will star Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani as a couple who, on the verge of breaking up, get entangled in a murder mystery in New Orleans. EW’s first look at The Lovebirds reveals slight clues about the upcoming film’s plot, showing the leads decked out in some pretty ridiculous outfits, which is likely thanks to the New Orleans shenanigans they’re bound to experience.
Michael Showalter will direct the film, his next collaboration with Nanjiani after previously working together on 2017’s Oscar-nominated film The Big Sick. The Marvel Eternals star was the first to sign up for The Lovebirds, with his involvement leading Rae to the project. The pair helped to re-write the script upon signing on, better developing their dynamic and adding more physical comedy for the newly-buff Nanjiani.
Nanjiani told EW that his favorite aspects of the film were “the rare moments of sweetness between the two leads,” explaining that “They spend so much of the movie bickering that the hints of what they used to be are my favorite.” Rae explained the importance of showcasing an interracial couple in the film, stating it’s “not a story about race but we wanted to acknowledge our race and the fact that we’re an interracial couple,” and that “Initially they were written for white people which, plot-wise, would have been a different story.”
The Lovebirds is set to open April 3, 2020, with a trailer expected to drop later this week.
