Indian Film ‘Project K’ Makes History at Comic-Con

Project K, the sci-fi feature known as Kalki 2898-AD, blends Star Wars and Indian Mythology. At Comic-Con’s Hall H, there was a noise panel for Project K.

Project K is the first Indian movie to be shown in a pop culture convention and the same room as big Hollywood movies like Marvel and DC. The panel featured Indian superstars: Prabhas, Kamal Haasan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Aswani Dutt (Bollywood producer). Each of their entrances was greeted with applause and screams of excitement.

The panel got to experience “Indian cinema in on the world stage,” and it shocked them how much excitement they were greeted with. The panel started with a line of drummers in Indian dresses and two lines of women making their way through the dark by candlelight. Once they got to the stage, they began a ceremonial dance.

Haasan says, “What makes Indian cinema so great is the energy our audience brings to our cinema.” Director, Nag Ashwin, says the film has been in the process for a while, with four years of prep and two years to film.

This is a historical moment for Indian cinema, and other filmmakers are noticing it. Swapna Dutt, the daughter of C. Aswani Dutt, said, “This is something we have not dreamt of. There was Telugu cinema, then Indian cinema. But bringing Indian cinema to Comic-Con is just incredible.”

The film will be released in 2024.
