McKinnon, with expert and cheeky precision, channeled Blanchett’s Carol Aird while Nanjiani portrayed a dim waiter who kept getting in the way of Carol’s attempted wooing of shopgirl Therese. Out comedians Jane Lynch (Glee) and Wanda Sykes (The New Adventures of Old Christine) joined in on the fun in a short that played up period conventions. The Carol parody got one of the biggest laughs of the entire show.
Carol, while receiving the most Indie Spirit nominations, mostly left the ceremony empty handed except for Ed Lachman’s triumph in the Best Cinematography category. Carol is also up for six Academy Awards but was famously snubbed for Best Picture despite wide acclaim from critics and cinephiles.
