IFC Films has acquired the distribution rights for Queen of Earth, a drama starring Elisabeth Moss (TV’s Mad Men) and Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice). The project premiered at the Berlinale film festival earlier this year.
The movie follows Catherine (Moss), who is getting over a breakup, and her childhood friend Ginny (Waterston) as they retreat to a lake house to reconnect. Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous) and Kate Lyn Sheil (You’re Next) also star.
Alex Ross Perry (Listen Up Philip) wrote and directed the project. He was recently brought on to write the script for Disney’s live-action Winnie the Pooh movie. His work has often been a showcase for lead performances: Jason Schwartzman earned acclaim for his performance in last year’s Listen Up Philip, and Moss is receiving similar praise for her performance in Queen of Earth.
IFC Films has recently grown as a distributor thanks in large part to the success of last year’s Best Picture nominee, Boyhood. The company hasn’t announced a U.S. release date but expects the movie to come out in the near future.
