Disney continues their trend of reviving older properties into live action movies, this time going the route of their 2014 film Maleficent, with a film based on iconic Disney villain, Cruella De Vil. Although it’s not the first outing of the famous 101 Dalmatians in live action, given the success of more recent live-action Disney adaptations, it is fair to assume Disney wants to bring back one of their other big properties to the big screen.
The film has Academy Award winner Emma Stone set to play the famous villain and now has a new director attached. Director Craig Gillespie, who’s most recent credit was last year’s Oscar nominated hit I, Tonya, is now set to direct Stone as the title character. The film initially had Broadway director Alex Timbers on board to direct the film, however due to scheduling conflicts between Timber’s stages productions of Beetlejuice and Moulin Rouge, and Disney’s fast tracking the film to be shot next year, Timber had to leave the production. Gillespie, who has worked with Disney before with The Finest Hours, is now in talks to fill in Timber’s shoes.
The script for Cruella is written by Jez Butterworth, co-writer of Spectre and Disney’s Maleficent 2. Marc Platt, producer of Disney’s upcoming Mary Poppins Returns, is set to produced alongside Andrew Gunn and Kristen Burr. The release date for Cruella is still to be determined but should be expected within the next year.
