Japanese franchise Hypnosis Mic will get its feature film next February with Hypnosis Mic – Division Rap Battle. The movie will mark Japan’s first interactive feature.
King Records created the franchise in 2017, centering on a world where men fight for power through rap battles. The universe has since expanded into music, radio dramas, mangas, stage productions, games and anime series.
Tsujimoto Takanori, known for Resident Evil: Vendetta, directed the film under Polygon Pictures. Momose Yuichiro wrote the screenplay, and Kazui worked on character design.
The story will include a new rap battle called the Third Division Rap Battle, where audiences can determine the outcome by voting for the winner through their phones. At Sunday’s AGF2024 event in Tokyo, the movie’s plans were announced, with tickets available for pre-order.
“Since its inception in 2017, ‘Hypnosismic’ has captivated a vast global fanbase […] as Japan’s first interactive film, Hypnosis Mic – Division Rap Battle not only elevates the commercial value of the IP but also enhances the viewer experience by engaging audiences in its unique interactive format,” the producers stated.
“Interactive movies are more than an entertainment novelty. They embody a profound integration of technology and film. This format introduces new business and revenue models for the film industry, moving beyond traditional cinema big screens into a multi-platform approach that includes gaming, streaming services and location-based entertainment,” they added.
The anime first aired in October 2020 on Funimation, with a new season airing in 2023.
