Following the success of his out of character role in Prisoners as the over-the-edge father resorting to extreme violence for the release of his kidnapped daughter, Hugh Jackman is in talks to step into the edgy role of Blackbeard, the antagonist in the upcoming original feature Pan based on the J.M. Barries classic character, Peter Pan.
English director Joe Wright, known for Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, and the 2012 adaptation of Anna Karenina will tackle his first big studio flick for Warner Bros. from the Pan script by Jason Fuchs (Ice Age: Continental Drift) that ended up on the 2013 Black List (Best Un-produced Screenplays). Peter Pan and Captain Hook are yet to be cast. Captain Hook will start out as an ally to Peter Pan before he turns against him when Peter Pan leads a revolt against the evil Pirates of Neverland. As we reported a month ago, Javier Bardem was the first choice for Blackbeard, but he’s since passed on the role. An open call will be issued for the Peter Pan character as well as Tiger Lily, a young woman in her early twenties).
Pan is being produced by Greg Berlanti and has a release date of June 26, 2015. It will compete with the opening of Seth MacFarlane’s Ted 2.
Hugh Jackman is busy in South Africa filming the new sci-fi-comedy Chappie, from Elysium and District 9 director Neill Blomkamp. The film, based on Blomkamp’s short film Tetra Vaal, is about a robot that is kidnapped at birth by two criminals and grows up as a prodigy in a dysfunctional family. The film also stars Sharlto Copley (Elysium, District 9) and Sigourney Weaver (Avatar, Alien).
