The first teaser trailer for the live-action remake of How To Train Your Dragon has been released online. The trailer first played in front of early access screenings of Wicked this week and has now been released publicly. It is only about a minute long, but it makes sure to give a sense of how the world of Berk will look outside the realm of animation.
The trailer opens with some sweeping shots of the world as well as some brief shots of how the dragons will look in the film. Only two human characters appear in the trailer, those being Hiccup and his father, Stoick the Vast. It ends by recreating the iconic scene of Hiccup and his dragon, Toothless, meeting for the first time and choosing not to hurt each other. Many fans have compared the scene to the original online, noting that they are shot almost identically.
While the trailer does not show too much, the film appears to be a faithful remake of the original 2010 animated film of the same name. The trailer aims to recapture the magic of that original film, especially now that the target demographic has grown up and likely will feel some nostalgia for the property. That film received two sequels, those being How to Train Your Dragon 2 in 2014 and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World in 2019. So, while it has been nearly 15 years since the original, it has only been about five years without a film in the series.
Dean DeBlois will be returning to direct How to Train Your Dragon, who previously directed all three of the other films in the franchise. He also notably directed Lilo & Stitch. Hiccup will now be played by Mason Thames (The Black Phone), but Gerald Butler will be reprising his role as Stoick. The film will be distributed by Universal Pictures and is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 13, 2025.
