Universal Studios is creating a live-action remake of the Dreamworks Studio original animated feature How To Train Your Dragon. According to an announcement, protagonist Hiccup will be played by Mason Thames, and Astrid will be played by Nico Parker.

Thames had his breakout role in the horror film The Black Phone alongside Ethan Hawke and Madeline McGraw and has garnered lead role in Incoming. Thames will also be seen next in the upcoming family adventure Boy of Summer with Mel Gibson. Parker had her breakout role with Pedro Pascal in the show The Last of Us and will be seen next in Suncoast with Woody Harrelson and Laura Linney. She was also the lead in the live-action Dumbo and The Third Day.

Original director Dean DeBlois will return to direct this remake as production begins this summer. The search for the live-action cast spanned many months because they wanted actors that would grow with the characters as the franchise expanded.

How To Train Your Dragon is trilogy that follows a young Hiccup, the son of Viking leader Stoick the Vast. As a tradition, Hiccup must slay a dragon as he comes to age. Hiccup cannot take a life and meets a dragon, Toothless, that he bonds with. Hiccup eventually learns to become a leader and to live harmoniously with the dragons. The trilogy portrays Astrid as initially hating dragons but finally bonding with one as Hiccup did. Astrid moves from being an enemy of Hiccup to his confidante, his partner.

The film is set to be released on March 14, 2025.
