The impressive early financial success of The Fault in Our Stars (it topped the box office this weekend) makes for another winning film for producers Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, the men who stand behind Maze Runner. Both producers seem to know a thing or two about the young-adult audience: they also produced all the Twilight films.
The critical success of The Fault in Our Stars also means another quality film to add to the resumes of screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber ((500) Days of Summer, The Spectacular Now). We can also likely expect more work from director Josh Boone, whose only other feature film was the relatively obscure Stuck in Love.
The Fault in Our Stars, which concerned a love story between two young cancer patients, Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and Gus (Ansel Elgort), was first a sensation as a novel, which has certainly contributed to its success. Additionally, author John Green has been a renowned internet personality for years: his YouTube channel VlogBrothers, which he shares with his brother, has over 2 million subscribers and over 400 million total views on all posted videos. His personal Tumblr page is also popular, and fans have made numerous Tumblr pages and memes dedicated to Green and the novel.
Woodley’s star power, which as steadily grown since here breakthrough role in Alexander Payne’s The Descendants, is likely also a contributor to the film’s financial success. She starred in Divergent, which took in $185 million in domestic box office returns, and Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer even expects the next film in the series, Insurgent, to earn nearly $400 million in total revenue.
