Horror Inc. announced its plans for a shared “Jason Universe” franchise based on the beloved Friday the 13th series. The new franchise plan includes many mediums including video games, TV shows, and movies.
The company developed an official Jason Universe website to advertise and build hype for this new direction. Though no content is available on the site, it offers the chance to sign up for a newsletter that will provide updates on the project.
Horror Inc. promised to honor the franchise’s legacy through the Jason Universe as they “develop new ways to watch, interact. and engage” with the hockey-masked murderer Jason Voorhees. Their president Robert Barsamian expressed excitement over working with original screenwriter Victor Miller and IP attorney Marc Toberoff, who helped Miller reclaim the rights to the series, “on new projects [they’ll] announce in the coming months.” With Jason’s prominence in pop culture 44 years later, the company “can’t wait to introduce new Jason Universe activations to these amazing fans.”
There are no set plans for new Friday releases, though there have been talks of a prequel TV series titled Crystal Lake and Blumhouse’s desire to make their reboot. Studio head Jason Blum has repeatedly shown his eagerness to dip his toes into Crystal Lake despite the rights battle between Miller and director Sean Cunningham. “It’s not a Blumhouse project, but I’m trying to will it into being one. It’s just a piece of IP I’ve always loved,” Blum explained.
Whether or not Blumhouse will get the chance to revive the series, this is the biggest news for Jason fans ever since the 2020 shutdown of the Friday the 13th online game. With this venture, they may get more content to give their favorite camp killer the proper attention they believe he deserves.
