Stephen King has written some truly horrifying stories over the past forty years and the countless adaptations have brought hours of entertainment. The Shawshank Redemption is one such entry, based on one of King’s short stories, and often referred to as “the best adaptation brought to film.” It tells the story of two men sentenced in prison for life and follows their relationship which spans over twenty years. This is a story about friendship, bonding and the human spirit entire. While not a horror film in the traditional sense, unless you considered being in prison for life, The Shawshank Redemption has been mentioned several times to be “one of the greatest films ever made.”
This was the film debut of Frank Darabont, who later directed two more films based on Stephen King’s work: The Green Mile and The Mist. Although the film was a box office disappointment, it earned critical acclaim from critics and audiences alike and was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Shawshank was also the most rented movie in 1995 once it hit home video.
Fathom Events, along with Turner Classic Movies, are now re-releasing this film into theaters for a special three-day event beginning on September 22nd! Tickets are on sale now so don’t miss out on this exceptional drama! While most people may think this is about prison, it’s only the setting. The Shawshank Redemption is a movie that you’ll never forget.
