Amongst the multitude of premieres that took place during the Cannes Film Festival, one of the films that made its debut was John Travolta’s new film. Travolta received quite the surprise, though, when he discovered that he was to be the recipient of an honorary Palme D’Or, one of the highest accolades Cannes can present.
With so many iconic roles in countless classic films, from Blow Out to Face/Off, Travolta is an actor who needs no introduction. Ironically, Hollywood Reporter noted that some of Travolta’s best known films have been screened at Cannes several times. Pulp Fiction was screened in competition back in 1994, but even some of his older movies, such as Grease and Saturday Night Fever, were brought back to play for attendees.
Although most well known for his work in front of the camera, Travolta was at Cannes for a film that he directed. Dubbed Propeller One-Way Night Coach, the film marks Travolta’s very first directorial endeavor, while also being a highly self-reflective work for him about the wonders of golden age aviation.
To say Travolta was surprised to receive the Palme D’Or would be an understatement. Already in attendance and discussing his film ahead of its debut, he was presented with the award by Thierry Frémaux himself, the head of Cannes. Hollywood Reporter shared a recording of the moment, with Travolta humbly showing off the award to a complete standing ovation. “You said this would be a special night, but I didn’t think you meant this,” Travolta joked.
