The holiday box office is packed with heavy hitters this season. It has everything ranging from Disney hits like Moana 2 to the heavy hitting musical Wicked. However, it is a prequel that takes the crown of most money earned this year, at least in the UK.
The Disney film Mufasa, a prequel to The Lion King, takes in £4.4 million at the Uk-Ireland box office on its debut weekend. That is around $5.5 million.
However, there are other notable films to consider as well. Wicked is going strong, with £2.5 million in its fifth weekend. Not to mention its running total of £48.2 million.
In third place is Disney’s Moana 2, earning around £2 million that weekend. This puts it at £29.7 million total during its time in theaters so far.
The runners up, in order, include: Paddington in Peru, Gladiator II, Conclave, Ivanov/Wright the Nutcracker, Kraven the Hunter, It’s A Wonderful Life (75th Anniversary), and The Red One.
On Christmas day, Bakrania Media released the Bollywood action film Baby John. The film is starring Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, Wamiqa Gabbi and Jackie Shroff.
Followed up on Boxing Day, Michael Gracey’s Robbie William’s film Better Man was released. It opened at over 300 locations. Spirted Away from Studio Ghibli also made a return to theaters.
Finally, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 released on December 27th.
