If the casting of former WWE Champion Dwayne Johnson isn’t enough to get you to see Brett Ratner’s upcoming Hercules movie, then maybe an strong supporting cast and some giant monsters can entice you. The new international trailer reminds us that Johnson and his muscles aren’t the only things in the film. John Hurt (Only Lovers Left Alive, Hellboy, and many, many British things) brings gravitas to any role he’s in; as does Ian McShane (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Cuban Fury, and many, many television things). Female cast members like Irina Shayk and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal get to show off their acting chops, plus….other things (let’s just say Johnson isn’t the only impressive body in the film).
The monsters ensure two things: we’ll see plenty of big-scale fight sequences, and the story will stick (relatively) close to its mythological roots. One of the many complaints lodged against the unrelated, recently released, Legend of Hercules was that it was more might than magic, keeping the fantastic side of Hercules in the background. Clearly, that’s not the case here. Mythology buffs should recognize creatures straight from Hercules legend, including the Nemean Lion, the Erymanthian Boar, the three-headed Cerberus, and the too-many-heads-to-count Hydra. And that army of warrior zombies might be from some myth somewhere.
Hercules is coming to theaters July 25, 2014.
