Amazon Studios has made it official, confirming that it has secured global rights to the Warhammer 40,000, often styled as Warhammer 40k game from Games Workshop for Henry Cavill to star in and executive produce the franchise across all Amazon Studios productions. The agreement includes rights to the universe across TV series, film, and likely games and animation. Since launching nearly 40 years ago, the Warhammer brand has expanded through miniatures, source books, tabletop games, animations, novels, a wealth of licensed material, and video games.
For those unaware, Warhammer 40,000 is a galaxy-spanning story about a distant future where humans have expanded throughout the universe and have gone to war with aliens and other supernatural beings. The world is so chaotic the series’ tagline is “In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, there is only war.” Cavill has been outspoken about his affection for the franchise. In a statement to Deadline:
“I have loved Warhammer since I was a boy, making this moment truly special for me,” said Cavill. “The opportunity to shepherd this cinematic universe from its inception is quite the honor and the responsibility. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the hard work put in by Vertigo, Amazon Studios and Games Workshop to make this happen. One step closer to making a nigh on lifelong dream come true.”
At the time, while Cavill is set to star, nothing is known about what character from the series he will portray or even his character’s name. Cavill has just exited his DC role as Superman following a cameo in the end credits scene of Black Adam. He has also left his starring role in Netflix’s The Witcher after three seasons, citing creative differences. Currently, he has Matthew Vaughn’s globe-trotting spy thriller Argylle, the upcoming reboot of Highlander, Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and Season 3 of The Witcher all set to debut in the future.
