While Cavill has portrayed the DC comics icon since 2013, there was always the nagging criticism of his Superman character and the world he inhabits being bleak, depressing, and not fitting with the spirit of the character. Now it seems that the bleakness is on its way out, with Cavill being excited for a joyful ‘Man of Steel’.
Cavill was working on Netflix’s The Witcher when a deal came together for him to appear in one scene in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, he recalled during a conversation with MTV’s Josh Horowitz at the 92nd Street Y Wednesday night. He had to get permission from The Witcher team, but as the actor recalled, “It was so top secret we couldn’t tell them what.”
When he arrived at the Warner Bros. studio in the U.K. for the shoot, he put on a suit that he chose because of its emotional resonance: the costume he wore in 2013’s Man of Steel, his first appearance as the last son of krypton.
According to The Hollywood Reporter
“I chose that one in particular because of the nostalgia attached to the suit,” elaborated Cavill during the conversation, which was a live taping of Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. “It was incredibly important to me to be standing there and enjoying that moment. That is one of the top moments in my career. It feels great to have the opportunity to wear it again.”
The conversation comes after a roller coaster of a week for Cavill. The actor returned to the big screen as Superman for the first time in five years in Black Adam. And Monday, he confirmed that he will portray Superman in future DC installments, saying in a video posted to social media that what audiences saw in Black Adam was just “a small taste” of things to come.
Cavill was first cast as the titular man of steel in the Zack Snyder helmed Man of Steel and has portrayed the character ever since. All the while Warner Brothers was dealing with a tumultuous time in its company’s history. Schedule changes, massive reshoots, and rewrites, and recently a new CEO has been hired and has kicked off his tenure by axing several upcoming DC Projects. Despite what some fans have criticized about the superman character, its often agreed that Cavill is a great fit for the character, and only time will tell if the change in tone leads to further success.
