Henry Cavill is Not Done with the DC Extended Universe

While Justice League struggled to get foothold this week at the box office, Superman portrayer Henry Cavill revealed in an interview with the LA Times that he is contracted to return to the superhero suit at least one more time.

According to the actor, “There’s a wonderful opportunity to tell the Superman story. Now there is a fantastic chance to show Superman in his full colors and tell a very complex, character-driven movie that is based on story and have that wonderful sensation of hope and happiness. A feel-good movie with lessons laced in there as well.”

The Superman that Cavill describes is a departure from the one depicted in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman and now in Justice League. In the recent iterations of the character, Cavill has portrayed a mostly existential and gloomy Clark Kent, trying to find his way among humans or against his fellow superhero Batman. A return to a Reeves-era spirited Superman may be just what the character needs to give him new life. Although, just because Cavill hopes this for the character doesn’t mean it will be so; but, if Wonder Woman does give audiences any hope, it should also extend to the remaining members of the Justice League.

After dying in Batman v. Superman and resurrected in Justice League, the Superman “creation myth” is now complete, opening the door for a fully realized Superman to exist in his iconic form. The DCEU has movies on the horizon through 2020 — Aquaman (December 2018), Wonder Woman 2 (November 2019), Shazam (April 2019), and Green Lantern Corps in 2020. It is unclear whether Superman will show up in one of the already announced films or if he’ll be afforded a new standalone.
