Kiyoko’s upcoming film, Girls Like Girls, starring Maya da Costa and Myra Molloy will release in theaters June 19, 2026. Focus Features will release the film, which is being produced by: Marc Platt, Katie McNicol, Dee Best, Michael Philip, Jason Moring and Richard Alan Reid.
The initial synopsis describes the film as a coming of age story that will explore love, identity, and the butterfly effects that make us who we are. The film is slated for Father’s Day weekend where it will go up against Toy Story 5, hoping to capture a different audience. Fans may recognize Maya da Costa from Hulu’s Under The Bridge and Myra Molloy from Netflix’s He’s All That.
This new film is based on Hayley Kiyoko’s hit song and coinciding music video, also titled Girls Like Girls. Fans who are familiar with these projects will be happy to know that da Costa will be portraying Coley and Molloy will play Sonya. The original music video debuted in 2015 and as of today has 160 million views on YouTube. In 2013, Kiyoko built on the popularity by releasing a book that built on the framework of her characters, and also earned her a spot on New York Times bestselling novels.
In the music video specifically, Coley and Sonya begin forming a bond, but Sonya has a boyfriend that interferes and gets physical with Coley after finding the pair in an intimate moment. Coley swings back and things are left with Coley and Sonya together. Ironically enough, Kiyoko penned the screenplay alongside Stefanie Scott, who portrayed Coley in the music video a decade ago.
Stay tuned into MXDWN as we will have more coverage on this film as the release date draws closer.
