In a matter of months, Happy Gilmore 2 went from a discussion point with actor Christopher McDonald, to a full-on production. According to Netflix’s Tudum, the company’s official website blog for all things Netflix, it has been confirmed that the company is working with Adam Sandler on sequel to the 1996 original film. Sandler currently has a $250 million deal with the streaming service, which is why the film is being produced and streamed with them, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In March, according to Variety, McDonald, who played villain Shooter McGavin in the original film, spoke during a radio interview that two weeks prior Sandler himself had shown him a first draft of the sequel film script.
“I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome,’” McDonald said. “So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”
A few weeks later Sandler would go on The Dan Patrick Show and speak with Patrick about the project. Although he would joke about how McDonald couldn’t be trusted with a secret, Sander would ultimately confirm that the project was in the works. He briefly mentioned that Netflix was excited about the prospect, but nothing was confirmed.
“We have a million ideas already, we just got to make it a movie and make sure we are excited about people enjoying it,” Sandler said during the interview. “It’s important. We love Happy Gilmore, we don’t want to let anyone down.”
While the project will premiere on Netflix, the original film is leaving the streaming service. For those in the United States, Happy Gilmore will be leaving Netflix on May 31. It is unknown if the film will return when the sequel is released.
Although there are no details about the plot or when production on the film will begin, fans of the classic Sandler film can get excited about when their favorite golfer will return to the big screen.
