Happy Death Day 3 seems as good as dead, or at least the director, Christopher Landon, believes so.
While Happy Death Day 2U wasn’t as big of a box office hit as its predecessor, Happy Death Day, both were received positively well by audiences and critics alike, making this film an instant cult classic. So when there was news that a tentative third film was in development, with Landon making a pitch to Universal Pictures in 2023, fans were excitedly waiting for the confirmation that the third feature was officially in production. But even though Jessica Roth, who stars as the main protagonist, Tree, in the first two films, was set to reprise her role for the third feature, Landon claims to have heard crickets from the production companies.
Opening up with SFX Magazine via GamesRadar about the situation, Landon said that he never wrote a script for the third film because he didn’t know if the production company was actually sold on making the feature or not. Landon did state that Blumhouse and Universal Pictures “talked about it becoming a three-part event thing for Peacock, which was kind of weird. I was like, ‘Alriiiiight! Whatever it takes.’ But then it went away, and that was the last we ever heard of it—which was years ago.” Landon seems to be as confused as the fans as to why they were never allowed to make a third installment, saying that both films were “financially very successful,” but that he doesn’t “call those shots. That’s entirely up to Blumhouse and Universal if they have an appetite or interest in it.”
Landon doesn’t seem too heartbroken about it, as he went on to direct the 2020 horror comedy Freaky and was attached to direct Scream VII before dropping out. He also directed the supernatural horror comedy We Have a Ghost, starring David Harbour and Anthony Mackie, in 2023. His next directed feature, Drop, starring Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar, is set to release in theaters on April 11th.
