‘Happy Death Day’ Director Christopher Landon Teases Third Movie

Jessica Roth as Tree in 'Happy Death Day'

Spooky season 2024 continues strong with an exciting update on modern horror franchise Happy Death Day, reported by the writer/director himself, Christopher Landon.

Christopher Landon has served as creator of the horror-comedy franchise since the original film’s debut in 2017. The sequel, aptly titled Happy Death Day 2 U came out in 2019, and after a lackluster performance at the box office, it was speculated that the series of films had been halted.

However, Landon has since confirmed his development on the third film’s story to Comicbook at New York Comic Con, reigniting hope in the bloody hearts of fans of the first two.  He even hinted at a fun twist that would instantly separate the movie from its predecessors.

“I could say that I wrote a treatment. I didn’t write the script, because I wouldn’t write a script unless it was a sure thing,” Landon shared. “Here’s the cool thing: It is a bigger movie, and it is not set on the same day as the previous two films. That’s the biggest spoiler I’ve put out there.”

With the developing third film being set on a day different than the day Jessica Rothe’s character Tree was forced to relive in Happy Death Day 1 and 2, it opens many doors of possibilities to be explored. Some fans even speculate a potential crossover with Landon’s other horror-comedy Freaky, starring Kathryn Newton, to be afoot.

Rothe too has expressed her excitement for Happy Death Day 3, fingers crossed we won’t have to wait too long!
