The war movie titled Hacksaw Ridge may soon have Mel Gibson as its director. He is currently in talks to fill the director’s chair alongside talks with Andrew Garfield, who is in negotiations for the lead role of an army doctor during World War II.Based on the true story of Desmond T. Doss, if negotiations go through, Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man) will play the role of the doctor, the first conscientious objector to win the Medal of Honor for his duties during World War II. During his time in the war, Doss refused to kill anyone, and was ultimately rewarded for his actions with the Medal of Honor, presented by President Truman.
Deadline first broke the news of these talks, and if Gibson and Garfield do choose to move forward with the film, it does seem a sensible pairing, given Gibson’s history directing films about war and hardship – including Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ. Garfield, still set to play Peter Parker in the third Amazing Spider-Man film in 2018, should have enough time to fit this movie in.
Hacksaw Ridge, still in the pre-production stage, is set to release in 2016.
