‘Guys and Dolls’ From 1955 Has a New Remake in Progress

With the recent production of films based on musicals such as Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story remake and Stephen Schwartz’s Wicked, Guys and Dolls is also getting a film reboot by TriStar Pictures. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film company acquired the rights from Samuel Goldwyn Films, producers for the original film and the short stories it is based on.

The musical, written by composer Frank Loesser, first appeared on Broadway in 1950. It was adapted into a 1955 film by director, Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Loesser, who also composed additional songs for the film. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards and the musical won five Tony Awards.

The film’s story follows two men, Nathan Detroit, and Sky Masterson, respectively played by Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando, who are looking for a date while also trying to organize a craps game. In order to get the money necessary to fund the game, Detroit bets Masterson that Masterson will not be able to convince a woman of Detroit’s choosing to go with him to dinner.

The production team for the film will include John Goldwyn, Marc Toberoff, and Meyer Gottlieb as executive producer.
