Sometimes movie titles are officially announced with a ton of pomp and circumstance, and sometimes they just find their way to the public via a slip of the tongue or other accidental routes. The latter is the case for 2017’s highly-anticipated follow-up to last year’s smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy, as Collider reports Marvel president Kevin Feige accidentally let slip that the movie will be called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
The slip-up occurred on a conference call this morning on which Feige was promoting Marvel’s upcoming Ant-Man. “Vol. 2” is of course a reference to Star-Lord’s mix-tape in the first movie, entitled “Peter Quill’s Awesome Mix Vol. 1.” The film’s director, James Gunn, confirmed the title later in the day via his Twitter account.
Yes, the official title for the @Guardians sequel is GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2. Nice detective work, @colliderfrosty, etc! You got us!

Though the title doesn’t reveal much about the movie’s actual contents, it is a clever “in-joke” that seems very much in keeping with the spirit of the first film. We’ll of course have more on this project as it develops. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on May 5th, 2017.
