Gringo, helmed by stunt coordinator/director Nash Edgerton, follows hard-luck pharmaceutical executive Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo), who finds himself in a heap of trouble after heading south of the border for a business trip. Once in Mexico, he’s betrayed by his bosses, clashing with drug cartel members and a killer-for-hire.
Oyelowo delivered a star-turning performance in 2014’s Selma as Martin Luther King, Jr. In Gringo, however, Oyelowo is a fearful, milquetoast businessman who inadvertently becomes a criminal.
Gringo also stars Thandie Newton, Charlize Theron, Joel Edgerton (who is also the brother of the film’s director, Nash), Sharlto Copley, and Amanda Seyfriend. In the official redband trailer, Gringo promises dark comedy and over-the-top theatrics akin to Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire (which also featured Copley).
Amazon Studios and STX’s Gringo hits theaters March 9.
