Sony had originally planned to release its adaptation children’s horror series Goosebumps on March 23, 2016 but has moved the film up to August 7, 2015. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has effectively swapped dates with the studio’s planned third film based on the Smurfs franchise, which now has the March 2016 date. Goosebumps will star Jack Black and Dylan Minnette while Smurfs will be a reboot, likely with a new cast.
Rather than adapt a single story in the series, Goosebumps will have Black star as series author R.L. Stine. The film will reveal that the monsters Stine wrote about are actually real and that he wrote the stories to keep them trapped within the pages of his books. He will have to work with two of his young readers in order to make sure the monsters stay where they are. Goosebumps is directed by Rob Letterman, written by Darren Lemke and Michael White, and produced by Neal H. Moritz and Deborah Forte.
Smurfs 2‘s box office take was far below that of its predecessor thus prompting the reboot and the additional time in development. Unlike the first two films, which used animation and live action, the reboot will be completely animated. The new film will be directed by Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2), and produced by Jordan Kerner and Mary Ellen Bauder.
