‘Godzilla x Kong’ Stomps Ahead To $80 Million Domestically And $194 Internationally

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire rampaged through the box office this past weekend and earned approximately $80 million domestically. With an additional $194 million in global gross, these behemoths have made their kingdom the fifth-biggest Easter opening of all time.

Many MonsterVerse fans worldwide have contributed to this success, helping it break many records. In China, for instance, the film landed about $44 million, a new record for Hollywood projects premiering there. It earned about $5.5 million in India, marking a new milestone for Legendary Pictures.

Though it wasn’t a huge success with critics, audiences adored the film, giving it an A- CinemaScore. According to data collected from these purchases, more than 67% of the total audience was male and 62% were 35 and under.

Many Legendary studio heads have celebrated this big win for their company, citing it as “an exciting result.” Legendary worldwide chairman Mary Parent stated, “The film does a great job for the core fans and succeeded in broadening the audience.”

With this strong opening, Godzilla x Kong has a high chance of beating Dune: Part Two’s total box office earnings. Dune has earned approximately $600 million worldwide, vastly exceeding its previous film’s opening at $406 million. Though this is a high number, it should be noted that Godzilla x Kong did pass up Dune: Part Two’s $46.5 million weekend earnings, supplanting the title of highest Hollywood gross in 2024.

Directed by Adam Wingard, this film is an impressive feat for the MonsterVerse, becoming the second-best opening of the franchise. This is impressive since it is the fifth entry in Legendary’s work for Godzilla.

No matter what critics might say, audiences are sending a clear signal to Hollywood that they are in love with Godzilla no matter the form he takes.
