Godzilla Minus One was released in theaters last year on December 1, 2023, and did very well upon its initial release. This year, to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Godzilla franchise, Minus One was rereleased into theaters with 13 extra minutes of bonus footage during its limited screening. The movie impressed and did well at the box office, bringing in an additional office haul of $510,000 during its rerelease weekend. The Kaiju film saw an even bigger spike in interest than the initial release and comes on the heels of Toho’s announcement for the Godzilla series.
Toho worked on the Minus One film and received many positive reviews, leading to an announcement that the studio would be producing another Godzilla film to follow their success with Minus One. While it is unclear whether this new film will be a direct follow-up of the Minus One movie, director Takashi Yamazaki who wrote and produced the 2023 hit will come back to direct the new installation to the franchise. Interest in the film from the rerelease indicates that the new movie will likely be a sequel to Minus One. As Toho continues to build its legacy within the Godzilla movies, its ability to keep interest and appreciation for the long-standing kaiju films might play a role in how the next film within the studio’s series is produced.
