Last April, Netflix greenlit a Carmen Sandiego animated series that is set to launch on the streaming service in 2019 with Gina Rodriguez voicing the title character. Now, the Jane the Virgin star will also be starring as Sandiego in a live-action feature, which will also be shown through Netflix.
Rodriguez has been somewhat of a rising star as of late, winning a Golden Globe for her role as the title character in Jane the Virgin, as well as making a transition to feature films recently. She just starred alongside Natalie Portman and Oscar Isaac in Alex Garland’s Annihilation and will next be seen on the big screen in Catherine Hardwicke’s Miss Bala, a remake of the 2011 film which is currently in post-production.
Publishing company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) is the owner of the Carmen Sandiego property and they are set to release a new series of Sandiego books next year that will coincide with the timing for the animated series release. Caroline Fraser, head of HMH Productions, will serve as executive producer of the Sandiego Netflix animated series and live-action feature. Gina Rodriguez will also produce through her production company I Can and I Will, which she launched in 2016.
There is no writer or director attached to the project yet. Deadline was the first to report the news.
